Hey There Winter Wanderer!

Written By: Scott Krycia

Who says van life has to take a break when the frost sets in? Not in the Northeast, where plenty of folks keep the camping spirit alive year-round in their RVs’. If you’re ready to embrace the winter camping adventure, I’ve got some tips to ensure you have a fun and safe experience in a winter wonderland.

Cozy Up with Insulated Sleeping Bags and Blankets

When the winter chill hits, it’s all about staying toasty. Get your hands on top-quality insulated sleeping bags and blankets made for cold weather. Look for those with low-temperature ratings to keep you snug all night long. Piling on those blankets can give you an extra layer of warmth, allowing you to run your heater at a lower setting. And remember, if you’re using propane for warmth or cooking, don’t forget to keep an eye on those levels!

Fresh Air Flow equals Good Ventilation

It’s crucial to balance insulation and warmth in your van with proper ventilation to prevent condensation and uphold good air quality inside. Consider cracking a window or utilizing a vent fan to encourage fresh air circulation. Additionally, be vigilant about ensuring the exhaust port for the heater or generator remains unobstructed. Blocked vents, especially with snow, could lead to the dangerous seepage of CO2 gas back into the van. To stay extra safe, I opted for a battery-powered CO2 detector for added peace of mind.

Emergency Ready with a Winter Kit

Make sure to assemble an emergency kit with key items like a first aid kit, extra food and water, a flashlight, batteries, a portable phone charger, tow straps, extra gloves, and a snow shovel. Also, be sure to have tire chains on hand in case you come across particularly snowy or icy roads. Well-inflated tires and chains can significantly boost your safety and stability when driving in winter conditions. Having these essentials readily available can be a lifesaver in unexpected emergencies or unforeseen situations while winter camping in your van. I learned the hard way in 2023 when I got stranded for a few hours on the interstate due to a weather shutdown, but thankfully, I had the van, power, and food to ride it out.

Pick the Perfect Campsite

Find a safe and amenity-packed campsite with facilities like bathrooms, water, and electricity if you need it. Look for flat, level ground to park your van and stay clear of snow-laden tree branches. And remember, Walmart can be a van lifer’s best friend for boon docking needs!

Chart Your Course and Weather Watch

Before you hit the road, plan your route thoughtfully and keep an eye on the weather forecast for your destination. Never hurts to sign up for weather alerts on your phone. Be ready for any weather surprises and have a backup plan just in case.

With these awesome winter van camping tips in your arsenal, you’re all set for a snug, secure, and unforgettable outdoor adventure in the chilly months. Embrace the snowy scenery, stay prepared, and create memories that’ll warm your heart in the snug haven of your van. Happy camping, and here’s to making the most of the frosty season!
