Spring-ish Adventures

Written By: Scott Krycia

There is nothing like the emergence of nature after the few bleak months of winter.   We were ready for some spring adventures that did not include snow, or so we thought.  The first day of spring this year was March 20.  That next weekend full of cabin fever, we set out for one of our favorite spots; the Adirondacks.

We usually stop at Lake George along the way.  It’s a nice point to stretch our legs and walk the Main Street and play some arcade games.  To our dismay, the street fronts were dark, many stores having not yet awakened form their winter slumber.   Luckily a pizza restaurant was open, then our journey continued.

As we were driving to our destination for the night snow began to slowly fall.

We stayed in a Taste of New York rest stop for the night, highly recommend.  The areas inside and out are always clean and well lit.  They even have a coffee vending machine inside.

We awoke to a winter wonderland of sorts.  Snow and ice clung to the trees not exactly the spring getaway we were hoping for.  Upon checking the weather app we realized a pretty significant ice storm was headed our way later that day.

A leisurely day of taking photos turned into a quicker paced day since we decided to leave early to avoid the storm.

Our next outing in April took us to Williamsburg Virginia to visit some 15-18 feet tall former presidents.

Presidents Park which hosted these large sculptures of former presidents up to and including George W. Bush opened in 2004 and closed in 2010. The sculptures now reside on private property for over a decade.  Around 8 times a year you can visit the grounds.

We took our time making the drive to Williamsburg, giving ourselves a whole day to stop and go along the way.   We stayed the night at Thousand Trails campground.  The campground had many amenities and was very well kept.  We were there on easter weekend, and they were even hosting an egg hunt.

President Heads is a sight to behold; they were created artist Daivd Adickes.(now 97 years young). You will find yourself face to face with a George Washington as tall as a house. The detail on these sculptures is incredible, you feel as if the eyes may blink at any moment.

Sadly, many of the sculptures are showing decay, after years of sitting the field with little upkeep.

We spent hours walking around the head clusters, observing and taking photos from all angles.  Be sure to wear sensible shoes because the area is quite muddy by the sculptures.  It was a very warm day; spring had skipped a step and went right to 85 degrees.

If you would like to visit the sculptures, you can find tickets and information online at
The Presidents Heads.

On the way home we stopped by Kiptopeke Breakwater aka concrete ships in Cape Charles Virginia where nine concrete ships, partially sunken, are lined up end-to-end just offshore.

We did some photos and a drone video and headed on our way.

A sign in Onley Virginia caught my eye.  a Pizza Hut Classic Restaurant.  Who knew one day we would feel nostalgia for plastic frosted red cups and checked tablecloths.

After a bit of confusion as to whether they were in fact open or not being it was Easter Sunday, they were.  Perfect spot for lunch, and it was fun to see all the retro decor.  There are over 50 of these ‘classic’ restaurants around.

We are already planning our next adventures.  This spring and summer will be exciting.
