Using AI to Help Plan Your RV Travels
This past winter I was researching and planning my upcoming summer trip to Newfoundland and decided to see if artificial intelligence (AI) could actually help. I had never used AI before, so I really wasn’t sure what to expect.
I opened ChatGPT and typed: “Plan a 33-day RV trip to Newfoundland. Arriving by ferry into Argentia and departing from Port aux Basques. I want to boondock as much as possible, hike, and photograph whales and scenery.” A few seconds later it generated a complete 33-day itinerary. Honestly, I was amazed.
It suggested daily driving routes, boondocking locations for every night, hiking trails, whale photography locations, scenic stops, and wildlife viewing areas. It even included weather patterns for that time of year, sunrise and sunset times, and seasonal travel recommendations. In some ways, it was almost too much information.
After refining it a few times — adding dates, removing places I didn’t want to visit, and adjusting the route — I suddenly had a very solid travel plan.
Now I have another tool for planning my travels.

AI as an RV Travel Planning Tool
One of the most time-consuming parts of RV travel is route planning and finding places to stay. Like many RVers, I rarely just drive from Point A to Point B. I’m always searching for scenic drives, overnight stops, good places to fuel up and rest, boondocking locations, hiking trails, photography spots, and interesting places to explore along the way. AI tools can help organize all of that incredibly fast.
You can ask an AI model things like:
- Plan a 10-day RV trip around Arizona beginning and ending in Quartzsite. Include boondocking spots and hiking trails.
- Find scenic stops along I-40.
- Suggest scenic waterfalls along my route.
- Recommend Corps of Engineers campgrounds along my route.
- Plan a scenic backroads route instead of interstate highways.
Instead of spending hours piecing together information from multiple websites, AI can generate a strong starting point almost instantly. That doesn’t mean I blindly follow every recommendation, but it gives me an outline to work from that can save an incredible amount of time.
Finding Places to Explore
One of my favorite parts of RV travel is discovering out-of-the-way places, and this is where AI can really shine. You can ask AI to help find:
- Scenic backroads
- Historic sites
- State parks with camping
- Quirky roadside attractions
- Small towns worth exploring
- Great photography locations
- Scenic overlooks
- Wildlife viewing areas

Many RVers tend to follow the same popular routes and destinations. AI can help uncover alternatives that are quieter, less crowded, cheaper, or simply more unique. Sometimes those hidden gems end up becoming the highlight of the trip.
Campground Research Made Easier
Finding the right campground during travel season can sometimes feel like a full-time job. AI can help narrow down options based on:
- Rig size
- Full hookups
- Pet friendliness
- Waterfront sites
- Price range
- Cell signal quality
- Big-rig accessibility
- Nearby hiking trails or attractions
It can also help compare different campground types:
- Private RV parks
- State parks
- National parks
- Bureau of Land Management land
- Corps of Engineers campgrounds
- Harvest Hosts locations
For travelers who move frequently, this can dramatically reduce research time.

Weather and Seasonal Planning
Weather can make or break an RV trip. AI tools can help identify:
- Ideal travel seasons
- Historic temperature patterns
- Snow risks
- Hurricane seasons
- Wildfire concerns
- High-wind regions
- The best times to visit crowded parks
This becomes especially valuable for snowbirds and full-time RVers who constantly move with the seasons.
You can even build entire travel loops around comfortable weather patterns throughout the year.
Budgeting for RV Travel
Fuel, campgrounds, maintenance, food, and attractions add up quickly on the road.
AI can help estimate:
- Fuel costs by route
- Daily travel expenses
- Campground averages
- Toll roads
- Budget-friendly overnight stops
- Travel distances and driving times
For long cross-country trips, having a rough budget estimate ahead of time can help avoid surprises.

AI Is a Tool — Not a Replacement for Adventure
No AI tool can replace the spontaneity of life on the road. Some of the best RV moments still happen unexpectedly:
- Taking an unplanned detour
- Meeting fellow travelers at a campground
- Finding a quiet lake at sunset
- Pulling into a small-town festival
- Discovering a scenic overlook that wasn’t on the map
AI works best as a travel assistant — not as the driver of the experience. It helps reduce stress, save time, and organize information so you can spend more time enjoying the journey itself.
Final Thoughts
RV travel has always been about freedom and exploration. Artificial intelligence is simply becoming another tool that can make that lifestyle a little easier.
From route planning and campground research to budgeting and seasonal travel planning, AI can help travelers spend less time behind a screen and more time experiencing the road.
For full-time RVers, weekend campers, or anyone dreaming about a cross-country adventure, AI is quickly becoming one of the most useful travel companions you can carry.
The open road is still the real destination — AI just helps make getting there a little easier.
My Newfoundland itinerary is ready for this summer, and I’m excited to explore this incredible area again. When I return, I’ll provide an update on how well the AI-generated travel plan actually worked out on the road.
