| | | Rekon, Rods, and Reliable Wi-Fi: CEO Dean Rumpel’s Insights on Ice Fishing with Starlink Mini |
| I’ve been a fan of Starlink for years and have relied on a second-generation system to stay connected at a remote wilderness camp. As my kids always remind me—safety first! With the recent release of the Starlink Mini in Canada, I decided to put it to the test on an ice fishing trip in my Rekon.
First Impressions The Starlink Mini is impressively compact—about the size of a standard 8.5” x 11” sheet of paper. It’s an all-in-one system with a built-in router, so setup is incredibly simple. Just plug it in, download the Starlink app, and within minutes, it locks onto satellites and provides internet access. The app even helps you position it for optimal performance. |

Mounting and Setup in the Rekon We often get requests for pre-wiring and mounting Starlink systems in camper vans, but with the portability of the Mini, that may no longer be necessary. For this test, I used a magnetic RAM mount to attach it to the hood of the Rekon, but you could just as easily use the built-in kickstand and set it up anywhere. Being able to move it around makes it especially useful for adjusting to avoid obstructions. Performance on the Ice To really push the Mini’s capabilities, I set it up while ice fishing on a frozen lake. With no obstructions in sight, I had a clear view of the sky—ideal conditions for Starlink. It provides the best speeds within a 50-foot radius, but I wandered 150 yards away and still had a signal, though speeds were noticeably slower. Some of our customers have even reported that they leave their Starlink Mini on their dashboard and it works surprisingly well. |

Team Kleiter third, Josh Mattern and his father and Pleasure-Way Operations Manager, John Mattern, got to live out an unlikely dream at the Brier Curling Championship in Kelowna, British Columbia, earlier this March. “We kind of joked about it throughout the weeks leading up to it. Then the opportunity presented itself. We were up in control of hammer, and they convinced me to get up,” John said. For now, John will go back to the sidelines and cheer on his son, who both equally share the excitement of the moment they shared.
Congratulations John and Team Kleiter! |

For the April 8, 2024, eclipse, they originally planned to watch from the Adirondacks but had to pivot due to unexpected cloud cover. At the last minute, they decided to drive to Newport, Vermont, which was in the path of totality. After an overnight stay at a truck stop, they joined fellow eclipse enthusiasts in a parking lot, where a lively tailgating atmosphere added to the excitement.
